Did you know it's PCOS awareness month?
That's right friends, September is PCOS awareness month.
What is PCOS anyway? PCOS is short for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and is estimated to affect up to 20% of women during child bearing age. Wow, that's a lot of women and most are suffering and do not even know it!
So how can a women tell if she may have PCOS?
Common signs and symptoms of PCOS are: •Irregular periods: infrequent, irregular or prolonged periods (this is the most common sign) •Acne: especially if you are in your 20's or 30's with severe acne •Excess Facial & Body Hair: especially course hair on the jawline or lower face that returns after laser treatment •Hair Loss or Male Patterned Baldness •Over weight/Obesity
PCOS can cause many complications such as infertility, metabolic syndrome or diabetes, and even depression or anxiety. The causes of this syndrome are complicated and are still unknown. What is known about PCOS is hormonal imbalances cause the symptoms.
So what can a woman do if she suspects she may have PCOS? •Eat an organic, fresh food, low carbohydrate diet •Exercise daily- walking, resistance training, yoga, cardio etc. •Decrease your stress levels- meditation, mindfulness, self care etc. •See a health professional •Contact Harmony Health Institute for help- please note in the near future we will be hosting webinars and podcasts to discuss these types of health issues and provide basic guidelines on supporting your health and well-being.
Even though many women are suffering from PCOS, they do not have to. As outlined in this post, there are simple steps that can be taken to determine a diagnosis and also steps that move toward correcting this syndrome and provide some relief.
